Run a (satirical) student body president campaign to increase community engagement in UNC-Chapel Hill's student government elections.
Team: Jackson Best (candidate), Julian Taylor (writer), Torrey Lin (editor), Aayas Joshi (videographer), Le Ha (producer & designer)
Background
Problem
only 7.2%
of students voted in UNC’s 2024 student body president election, halving the previous year's turnout.
The Oh Well's Role
What can The Oh Well, the only trusted (satire) news source on campus, do to get students more involved in the election?
Opportunity
Run our own student body president campaign.
The candidate for people who weren't going to vote.
We registered the Best candidate, Jackson Best, (yes, that is his real name) and ran the Best campaign.
We launched the campaign with a video:
Within 24 hours, we reached

signatures
to get Best on the ballot
and went viral on UNC's online communities (YikYak & Instagram).

Students meme-d Best on their own.

We canvassed,

launched a platform,

and lightheartedly called people out for not signing our petition.
Even when Best didn't make it onto the official ballot, we didn't give up.
